Why do I want to study at Manchester School of Architecture.
Having looked at a variety of universities and their architectural courses I found that many focus primarily on design. As an aspiring architect, I recognise the significance of design based learning but also theory based learning. I understand the importance of technicalities within architecture alongside aesthetics. Manchester School of Architecture offers a combination of these components, through a course that gives credit across humanities, theory and practicals and this highly appeals to me. While having the advantage of a well structured course, MSA also sits within a large city rich in culture, contemporary architecture, and innovative architects. It is for these reasons that I would value the opportunity to study at MSA and build on my skills through the city.
Review of a building I visited.
I recently visited the V&A Dundee. Despite costing twice is estimated budget and being four years late, I feel it brought a bold and contemporary presence to Dundee’s skyline. The buildings hull-like form is covered in slabs of gnarled concrete, that are fragment in places, creating a silhouette similar to a Scottish cliff face that I feel sits beautifully riverside. The twisting mass of the entrance reveals the gaping mouth of a cave like walk way that entices visitors to begin meandering around the interconnecting paths that lay within. Through his concept of assembly, Kengo Kuma's vision of creating a 'living room for the city' was definitely achieved, however I believe the museum creates an even bigger impact, as it reconnects the city to its historic River Tay waterfront.
My favourite architect.
As an artist, I most appreciate Frank Gehry's work – essentially functional pieces of art, which is what I believe architecture should be. While perfectly practical, his work is aesthetically pleasing yet defies the traditional brick semblance of British architecture through his use of unorthodox materials that defy notion. Reading about Frank Gehry, I was amazed by his consideration for surrounding landscapes and how he allowed them to inspire his work to fit within its location and become part of society. Gehry's work has taught me that architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness. It is because of Gehry that I hope to allow my environment to inspire my direction but also push me to be creative in my approach towards becoming an architect.
Work of architecture I would like to experience.
Sagrada Familia has been a building that has fascinated me my whole life. The cathedral holds a significant presence within its city that brings an ambiance I would love to encounter. Gaudi's intention to express Christian belief through architecture I feel is accomplished through the micro detailing which induces a sense of awe that reflect that of a religion experience. Im completely intrigued by the messages behind architecture and the potency of this building drives my interest evermore deeper.
