Statement

Why do I want to study at Manchester School of Architecture. Having looked at a variety of universities and their architectural courses I found that many focus primarily on design. As an aspiring architect, I recognise the significance of design based learning but also theory based learning. I understand the importance of technicalities within architecture alongside aesthetics. Manchester School of Architecture offers a combination of these components, through a course that gives credit across humanities, theory and practicals and this highly appeals to me. While having the advantage of a well structured course, MSA also sits within a large city rich in culture, contemporary architecture, and innovative architects. It is for these reasons that I would value the opportunity to study at MSA and build on my skills through the city. Review of a building I visited. I recently visited the V&A Dundee. Sense of Place - Photography

 Each of these photos were taken with black and white film and are part of a series that reflects my own sense of place - Birmingham. The images aim to illustrate the architecture which my character has been build by and the materials that it has been built with. Also these photos aim to capture the distorted sense of place within Birmingham through a minimal and naked lens which frames the dying industrial features of our great city.

Sense of Place - Portraiture

This A1 Portrait has been influenced by the style of Paul Wright. The painting has been done on transparent acetate using acrylic paint. The image is part of my 'sense of place' concept and aims to project vague hints of heritage and 'sense of place'/identity through colour and depicts less distortion through the use of compact, flowing strokes. This A1 portrait is based on an image from my own photography and is part of my 'sense of place' concept. I have used oil paint and charcoal on top of an A1 card canvas. The Portrait aims to reflect the distorted sense of place of individuals, struggling with identity, experience.  This A2 portrait is inspired by Elly Smallwood and is part of my 'sense of place' portraiture concept. Sense of Place - Architecture

This A2 drawing was drawn from life as I visited a closed down industrial factory in Digbeth, Birmingham.  The image was drawn using black biro onto acrylic covered acetate. This drawing is part of my 'sense of place' project focusing on the distorted identity perspective of Birminghams industrial buildings. This drawing was based off a photo I had taken of the old law courts in Birmingham. The A3 image was done using biro, charcoal, pencil and ink and has layers of masking tap across it. Being part of my 'sense of place' project the image aims to reflect some distorted sense of place as it differs from its surrounding architecture. This image is of my final piece. Each scene has been etched into transparent acrylic using a scribe. The scenes are based off my photography and were used as part as an installation piece.
